Opp battles into championship game, falls late

The Opp 12U All-Stars battled back from the loser’s bracket with wins over Brantley, Covington County and East Brewton, but fell in the championship game to Brewton on Sunday night in the Cal Ripken District Tournament in Andalusia.

 

BREWTON 15,

OPP 9

Opp fought back and grabbed a late lead in the 12U Cal Ripken district championship game, but Brewton blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth to take a 15-9 victory.

Brewton got three runs in the opening frame off a walk, an error and one hit to put early pressure on the Bobcats.

In the top of the second, Jackson Pierce got things started with a line drive single straight back up the middle, and then came around to score on single from Tanner Hall.

Brewton responded in the bottom of the second inning with three more runs to take a 6-2 lead after two innings of play.

There was no quit in the Bobcats, though, as they rallied back with four runs to tie the game 6-6.

Robbie Gafford singled, Owen Patters was hit and Ethan Cox singled to load up the bases for Opp with no outs in the top of the third.

Pierce followed with a blistering hit into the outfield that scored two runs.

Dawson Booth drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Curt Zorn drove in a run with a single to tie the game.

Brewton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run.

Pierce doubled to start the top of the fifth inning and then Walt Spurlin crushed a high fastball over the fence in dead center for what appeared to be the go ahead home run, but a balk was properly called resulting in a dead ball and Spurlin had to swing the stick again.

Spurlin got back in the box and hammered a single into the outfield to tie the game 7-7. Hall then gave Opp the lead when he drove in Booth with a single.JT-Dee

However, Brewton’s bats broke loose for eight runs to give them a 15-8 lead heading into the final inning.

Opp picked up one run in the top of the sixth to make the final 15-9.

 

 

OPP 20,

In the first game of the day Saturday, Opp hammered past Brantley 20-2 in four-inning contest.

Opp took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Cox drove in Pierce with a single.

The young Bobcats broke the game wide open in the bottom of the second and took a 12-0 lead. Pierce drove in run with a double and Cox had the big blow in the inning with a two-run bomb.

Opp continued to pile on the runs in the bottom of the third with eight more runs. Spurlin, Cox and Pierce each had RBI singles in the inning.

Brantley picked up two runs in the top of the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going.

 

OPP 13, 

EAST BREWTON 3

Opp got things started Sunday strong Sunday with a 13-3 win over East Brewton in the district tournament semifinals.Robbie-Gafford

Opp jumped out front with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gafford got things started with and then came around to score off an error.

Tripp Hawthorne added two runs with rocket shot in the gap between first and second to give Opp a 5-0 lead.

Gafford then drove in Dawson Booth for the final run of the inning.

East Brewton got one run back with a leadoff home run, Hall proceeded to shut them down.

After Cox drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second, Pierce ripped a doubled over the left fielder’s head that allowed Cox to score. Opp got two more runs off errors to take a 9-1 lead into the third inning.

Opp ended the game by mercy when Booth laced a two-run double into the outfield to give Opp a 13-3 when and a spot in the championship against Brewton.
