The Covington County 8U All-Star softball team picked up wins over Lionsville and Ashland on Friday night in the opening round of the Babe Ruth Softball sub-state tournament at the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex.

In the opening game of the day, jumped out front and held on for a 21-9 victory over Lionville.

Strong defensive plays from Covington County kept Lionville from scoring five runs in all but the first inning of the contest.

Taya Newton drove in three runs with an inside-the-park home run that put Covington County on top 4-0 in the opening inning.

Against Ashland, the Covington County All-Stars used strong bats and solid defense to come away with a 13-3 victory in just four innings.

Covington County jumped out front 5-0 in the opening frame and tacked on five more runs in the second inning.

With three runs in the third inning, and near perfect top of the fourth inning on defense, Covington County picked up a 13-3 win.
