The 10U Covington County All-Star softball team made a strong showing  with two wins in the opening day of the Babe Ruth Softball Sub-State tournament at the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex on Friday.

 

COVINGTON COUNTY 11, BREWTON 1

In the opening game of the tournament, the Covington County All-Stars knocked off the Brewton All-Stars 11-1.

The score was 0-0 after one inning of play, but Haley Ward came around to score off and error to put Covington County on top 1-0 in the top of the second inning.

Covington County went on top 2-0 when Elizabeth Cross laced a single into the outfield that scored Haley Chance.

On the mound for Covington County, Ashlee Findley mowed down the Brewton batters in order in the bottom of the second.

Findley continued the strong work with by retiring Brewton with three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the third inning.

Covington County got things going with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and took a 6-0 lead.

A walk to Kadin Watson and a single from Cross got Covington County in business. A single and error off the bat of Kayden Weaver put Covington County on top 4-0.

Meleah Treadway then scorched an RBI single into the outfield and pair of errors also allowed her to score to give Covington County 6-0 lead.

Brewton picked up one run in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Chance, Ke Mariah each came around to score on an single from Cross and then Cross scored on an error off the bat of Weaver to give the Covington County All-Stars a 9-1 advantage.

Ivy Youngblood got things going for Covington County in the top of the sixth inning when she drove a single into the gap that drove in a runner for a 10-1 lead.

Youngblood then scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ward to put Covington County up 11-1.

 

COVINGTON COUNTY 10, EAST BREWTON 0

The Covington County 10U All-Stars capped off their big Friday with a 10-0 victory over East Brewton in the second round of the Babe Ruth sub-state tournament.

Findley picked up right where she left off on the mound, and struck out the first three batters that she faced to start the game.

On the offensive side of things, Cross got Covington County off to a bang when she ripped a ball over the head of the left fielder. The left and center fielders raced to the ball, but Cross turned on the burners and crossed home plate for an inside the park home run.

After one inning of play, Covington County held a 1-0 lead.

East Brewton’s first batter hit a little dribbler to Chance and second, who fired to Treadway at first for the first out of the second inning. Findley then struck out the next two batters of the frame.

Ward reached on a one-out walk and then Chance singled to get things started in the bottom of the second.

Ward scored off an error and then Cross drove in Chance with a double over the head of the left fielder.

Weaver then drove in a run with a single and later scored on passed ball to put Covington County up 6-0.

Findley’s dominance on the mound continued to be felt as she struck out the side in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, Chance drove in Treadway for an 8-0 Covington County lead, and Cross drove in the final runs of the game with her second inside-the-park home run.

Covington County will play Wedowee in the semifinals today at noon.
