County 12U takes out Roanoke

Covington County’s 12U softball All-Stars survived their first elimination game with a 13-0 win over Roanoke Saturday in the Alabama 12U Babe Ruth state championship tournament at the Dwight Mikel Sports Complex.
Summer Beverly picked up a one-out infield single and then promptly stole second base to get Covington County in business. A wild pitch then allowed Beverly to score the first run of the game.
A walk to Lexie Odom, followed by a few wild pitches allowed Odom to put Covington County on top 2-0.
After a strong play from Roanoke shortstop gave Covington County two outs in the opening inning, Marion Bradley singled and walks to Abbey Glidwell and Lexie Cook loaded up the bases for Courtney Griggs.
Griggs cashed in on the opportunity as she roped a two-RBI double to put Covington County on top 4-0.
Covington County starting pitcher Cooks retired the Roanoke batters in order in the bottom of the first with a ground out, pop out and a strikeout.
In the top of the second inning, Pearce Hammett and AJ Singletary drew walks to start the frame.
After moving up to third on passed ball, Hammett came around to score when Kaitlyn Beverly reached on a dropped third strike.
Wild pitches allowed Singletary and K. Beverly to score for a 7-0 Covington County lead.
S. Beverly then ripped a single to center and ended up on third when the Roanoke center fielder booted the ball. S. Beverly scored a few pitches later on passed ball.
The Covington County catcher, S. Beverly, made a terrific sliding catch along the backstop on foul ball for the first out of the bottom of the second inning.
Cook picked up another strikeout in the inning and kept Roanoke off the scoreboard.
K. Beverly put Covington County on top 10-0 in the top of the third inning with a single that allowed Hammett to score.
Passed balls and wild pitches led to K. Beverly, S. Beverly and Odom all to score in the top of the third inning to help give the Covington County All-Stars a 13-0 victory.
However, in their second elimination game on Saturday, the Covington County 12U All-Stars were eliminated from the tournament after falling to Brewton.
East Brewton then topped Brewton on Sunday for the 12U state championship.
