Tough loss eliminates Covington County from state

The 10U Covington County All-Stars slugged it out with the top teams in the state in the 2016 State Tournament at Johnson Park, but where eliminated in the first round of bracket play on Monday afternoon.

 

THEODORE 7, 

CC 3

Covington County and Theodore got the tournament started on Saturday morning with Theodore rallying late for a 7-3 victory.

Covington County threatened with a pair of runners in the top of the first, but couldn’t bring any around to score.

On the mound for Covington County, Clark Gay kept the Theodore hitters off balanced an retired them in order with a ground ball, pop up and strikeout to start the game.

Both pitchers continued to deal and the score remained 0-0 heading into the fourth inning.

Gay got the top of the fourth inning started with a line drive single. Clark Jordan followed with a single and then Logan Jordan drew a walk to load up the bases.

Kolton Cauley then picked up a painful RBI when he was hit by a pitch to put Covington County on top 1-0.

Landen Stokes added to the lead with a RBI single that scored Logan Jordan.

After Theodore picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, Clark Jordan drove in Levi Lee in the top of the fifth to give Covington County a 3-1 lead.

Theodore came roaring back in the bottom of the firth inning with six runs to give them a 7-3 victory.

FLORENCE 17,        CC 1

Covington County was handed their second loss in as many games when Florence defeated them 17-1 on Saturday night at Johnson Park.

Stokes scored the only run of the game for Covington County.

 

ALEX CITY 17,         CC 6

Alex City put Covington County 0-3 in pool play with a 17-6 victory on Sunday at Johnson Park.

Covington County got runs from Sanders, Gay, Brooks and Smith in the loss.

 

ATTALLA 12,            CC 8

The Covington County All-Stars gave it their all, but late rally just wasn’t enough to fight off a 12-8 Attalla victory on Monday morning in the opening round of the single elimination bracket.

Covington County fell behind 10-3 early, but a big fourth inning closed the gap to 10-8.

Sanders had a the big hit in the inning with three RBIs for Covington County.

With the loss, the Covington County 9U All-Stars have been eliminated for the state tournament.
