Mizell Wellness Center’s Joni Ross has been teaching kids how to stay active and healthy during their summer Kid Fit Camp in Opp.

“We’ve been doing this now for four years,” Ross said. “It’s just a two-week camp during the summer that gives the children around here something else to do.”

Ross said that giving the children something to do was the main purpose of starting the Kid Fit Camp.

“I’m a mom and know that there isn’t a lot of activities around here to do in the summer,” Ross said. “So I tried to brainstorm something that I could do by myself to keep them active, and show them stuff that they can do on their on after the camp is over.”

The kids up with Ross two hours a day, three days a week for two weeks in the summer.

“I try to keep it as fun as possible for them, but at the same time they are getting great exercise,” Ross said. “We give them a healthy snack, they swim, do cardio and body-weight strength training. In the pool they do racing relays and I also run through some of the exercises that I use with my adult water aerobics classes.”

Ross said that in the future she hopes to offer two sessions over the course of a summer.

“I want to do a couple of sessions at some point to get more children involved,” Ross said. “We try to get it done before the Fourth of July because that’s when people tend to start leaving town for the rest of the summer on vacations. We try to get done before that so that it doesn’t interfere.”

Keeping the camp inexpensive is something Ross said she would always do.

“I want it to keep affordable for everyone,” Ross said. “It’s just $35 for the two weeks. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback about and the kids seem to all love it.”
