Grace Peacock Franklin

Mrs. Grace Peacock Franklin, born Jan. 12, 1922, in River Falls, Ala., is resting in Heaven with her Lord and Savior. She quietly left this world on July 3, 2016, at the amazing age of 94.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family was her life. She rejoiced in watching her five great-grandsons grow up. A true Southern lady, raised in the Depression and tempered by the war years, she survived the death of her two sons, Donald Wayne Franklin at birth, and James Curtis Franklin, Jr. at age 7, and the death of her husband, WWII veteran, James Curtis Franklin. She is also predeceased by two sisters, Frances Peacock Lorton (Ralph) and Ann Peacock Curtis.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue Franklin Taylor; son-in-law Ward Stafford Taylor; granddaughter Heather Taylor Kirby; grandson-in-law David Bruce Kirby; grandson Lance Ward Taylor and his fiancée Monica Garrick; five great-grandsons, Colin Taylor, Cooper Taylor, Mason Taylor, James Kirby and Andrew Kirby; brother-in-law Benny King (Mary); and nieces and nephews, Diane Cassady Hardcastle (Glen), Tommy Cassady (Dawn), Johnny Cassady (Susan) and Brenda Cassady (Dan) McFall, Mike Lorton, Pam Curtis Nelson (Jim), Hank Curtis, and Carol Lorton Ewing (George).

Grace was gentle, kind and full of grace, living her life with dignity. She was hard-working and generous, always ready to give much more than she received. She loved to cook for her family and a seat at her table was always filled with delicious food and her staples of sweet tea and buttermilk cornbread. Her life and faith were a true testament to her family and those who knew her. She was very much a fine Christian lady her whole life. We know that she is now united with her husband and sons and those who preceded her in this life. What a glorious reunion it must be! The dignity with which she walked through this life has been restored in the arms of Jesus.

Graveside services will be held Wed., July 6, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Aaron and the Rev. Edward Britton officiating. Pallbearers will be Campbell Kyle, Earl Johnson, Dan McMullen, Tommy Cassady, Johnny Cassady and Troy Cassady. Foreman Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the West End United Methodist Church, 1310 River Falls St., Andalusia, AL or the charity of your choice.

Daniel McLaren, Jr.,

Mr. Daniel McLaren, Jr., 78, of Andalusia, passed away Sun., July 3, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. McLaren grew up in Tampa and St. Petersburg and graduated from Northeast High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in their submarine school. He spent 22 years in the Navy and upon retirement began teaching in Escambia County, Fla., school system where he taught for 22 years. After his retirement, he became a United Methodist minister for 10 years and was near his ordination when health problems forced him to retire prematurely. He and his wife moved to Andalusia from Brewton in 2004 and became active members of the local First United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thurs., July 7, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jason Thrower officiating .

He is survived by his wife, Marlene McLaren of Andalusia; two daughters and son-in-law, Terrie Ann and Greg Beasley and Tracy Jo Jones of Brewton; six grandchildren, Kelli Gatwood, Miranda Andrews, Caleb Beasley, Steven Beasley, Samantha Flux, and Christopher Jones; three great-grandchildren, Coley Gatwood, Casen Gatwood, and Tristan Flux; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Joe DeLapo of Burlington, N.J.; a niece, Ann Tufano; one great-nephew, Enrico Tufano; and great-niece, Sofia Tufano

Alvie Gene Atkins

Mr. Alvie Gene Atkins, age 73, passed away Tues., July 5, 2016, at Andalusia Manor.

Funeral services for Mr. Atkins will be held at 2 p.m., Fri., July 8, 2016, in the Keahey Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jack Day officiating and burial following in the Buck Creek Baptist Church cemetery with Keahey Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thurs., July 7, 2016 at Keahey Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Atkins of Andalusia; sons, Donald Gene Atkins of Andalusia, and Paul Edward Atkins of Andalusia; sister, Shirley (Don) Harville of Opp; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
