There’s going to be plenty of baseball to watch this weekend as the 2016 13U Babe Ruth State Tournament begins Saturday at LBWCC.

Covington County’s 13U All-Stars are the host team for the 2016 tournament.

“We were hoping to have more teams in it, but some backed out last minute,” Covington County Babe Ruth former president Eddie Stacy said. “Three teams dropped out because of football and basketball camps. Mobile and Dothan didn’t send any teams this year.”

Teams from Florence, Opp, Sylacauga, Tallassee and host Covington County will begin with a round robin on Saturday and Sunday.

“There should be some be some good baseball being played all three days,” Stacy said. “I know it’s going to be a hot one, but we are hoping to have some good baseball to watch.”

There will be no gate fee to enter the game, Stacy said.

“We want to encourage everyone to come out and support these kids,” Stacy said. “They really worked hard to prepare for this tournament. Everyone that’s on the Covington County Recreation League board has done a great job getting ready for the event.”

The top two teams from the round-robin event play for the state championship on Monday.

“I expect there to be some good baseball,” Stacy said. “The winner of this will advance to the regional tournament in Oklahoma. They are all excited about getting that kind of opportunity.”
