Kids from all around Covington County have enjoyed the opportunity to learn how to play tennis at tennis camp at LBWCC.

“We have had a lot of kids come out this year,” Monica King said. “There were 80 kids that signed up, and we have had a pretty steady participation rate the entire summer.”

King said the kids have enjoyed the camp so far, but that the focus on the camp is learning how to play tennis.

“The kids have had a great time,” King said. “Coach Paul Smith teaches them a lot of skills stuff. It’s more geared towards skills than fun stuff.”

Smith along with assistance from King and a few members of the Andalusia High School tennis team teach the kids how to properly play the game.

“Technique is the main focus of camp,” Smith said. “I want to instruct them and demonstrate the right way to do things.”

Smith said this year has been one the best camps he can remember.

“It’s been really great this year,” Smith said of the camp. “I’ve noticed that the skill level has gone up. That’s a result of a lot of returning players. This advanced and intermediate group have shown great improvement. I can tell that they have taken what we’ve taught the in the past and worked on it on their own time.”

Even though the players have shown improvement, Smith said they still have to keep pushing forward.

“There is still work to be done,” Smith said of the players. “In tennis, like life, there are always things that you can work on improving.”
