Ms. Gregory was affectionately known as Ms. Ammons to some, Ms. Ruby by other folks and simply as Mom, Momma, Grandma or Granny to rest of us. She was born on April 30, 1928, in Tulsa, Okla., to Alva and Bertha Gregory, whose maiden name was Woodell. They moved to Brownsville, Texas, in 1932. Mom graduated from high school and was later married to Carmen Ammons for 32 years. Mom had eight children; Peggy, John, Carl, Ray, Allen, Jimmy, Charles and Billy; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mom was also a mom, granny or kind soul to all the children who would stop by to see her, including my step-sister, Kathy, and my half sisters, Patricia, Shirley and Suzianne. All the children in the Loango community loved Mom, and the feeling was mutual.

Mom had a special connection to children, and she would share her love of music, arts, philosophy and whatever else was on her mind to all. Mom never met a stranger and would actively engage in conversations in the Bible teachings and beyond. We all loved her for the way she was and God knows that there will never be another one like her. Mom will always be remembered for her kindness, compassion and for her ability to remember birthdays, special days and events for all. Mom would pick out “You are My Sunshine” on guitar or send you a homemade card in the mail, and it would make your soul shine. Mom would always make sure that you had plenty to eat and plenty of cover on a cold night. Mom was a three-time cancer survivor and epitomized the poem, “Do not go gentle into that good night.” To sum it all up, mom was the true meaning of LOVE.

Mom was preceded in death by her sons, Allen and Carl Ammons; her daughter, Peggy (Ruel) Armstrong; her parents Bertha and Alva; and her brother “Jr.” and her great-grandchild, Silas Scott Cline.

Mom is survived by five sons, John (Linda) Ammons, of Slapout, Ala., Ray Ammons of Andalusia, and Jimmy, Charles and Billy Ammons of Loango; one brother, Robert Gregory of Brownsville, Texas; two sisters; Betty (Richard) Plybon of Spring, Texas, and Mary Lewis of Brownsville. She also leaves to cherish many memories her numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing and visitation will be held at the Foreman Brown Services Funeral Home in Andalusia from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mon., July 18, 2016. Services will be held at the same place at 10 a.m. on Tues., July 19, 2016. Interment will follow at the Old Bethesda Cemetery near the Loango community. Pall bearers will be Jeremiah Armstrong, Chris Ammons, Justin Ammons, Eli Ammons, B.J. Ammons, and Jack Ammons.
