Children from all over Covington County have enjoyed the City of Andalusia’s summer tennis camp at LBW, and this week the kids are wrapping up camp with a tournament.

“It’s been really hard this year,” camper Nathan Shellhouse said. “I got to skip a level, and it’s been hotter this year. It has been a lot of fun, though.”

Nathan said besides just having fun he has also learned more about the game.

“I learned that it doesn’t matter how hard you hit your serve,” Shellhouse said. “It just matters that you get it over the net.”

Koyla Barton is a first year camper and said he has really enjoyed it.

“It has been a lot of fun because it doesn’t matter if your win or lose,” Barton said.

Ethan Shellhouse has been attending the camp for the past few years, and says he always learns something new.

“It’s been really fun, but it’s also been very challenging,” Ethan said. “Tennis teaches you a lot of discipline because it takes a lot of practice to get good at it. I’ve been playing for five or six years and I still have trouble with it. It teaches you to be vigilant in what you are doing.”

Ethan said his favorite part of tennis camp has been playing and meeting the other campers.

“Playing matches has been really fun,” Ethan said. “Just learning what how the other kids play the ball, and just enjoying their company.”

Ruby Cooper is another camper who has been attending the camp for the past few years.

“The first time I played tennis, I thought it was my favorite sport, and then I tried out some other sports and realized I loved them all,” Cooper said. “I just love running, hitting and having fun. I do sports because they are fun to me, and I love to run and be outside.”

Cooper said she learned some new things at camp this year as well.

“This year I learned how to hit my forehand from the side and not down,” Cooper. “I also learned to hit the ball all the way through and not stop on impact.”

In her first year of tennis camp, Lexi Aldrich said she has noticed herself getting better.

“At the beginning of the year, I was bad,” Aldrich said. “I’ve been progressing a lot since then. I’ve learned how to serve because before I couldn’t hit it over the net. I’ve also learned how to keep points.”

Aldrich said she has had a blast, and looks forward to coming back.

“It’s been great being around people who can teach me how to play, and also be a good influence on me.”
