Andalusia now has a new option for cellphone coverage.

Cricket Wireless opened several weeks ago, and currently employs two people.

Employee Jerome Tomberlin said they have been busy since they opened in the old Golden Bliss Tanning location next to Video Warehouse.

“We’ve been extremely busy,” he said.

Tomberlin said the company has good coverage locally.

Cricket is a subsidiary of AT&T and operates off of the same towers AT&T customers utilize, but there are no contracts and service is prepaid.

AT&T inherited the brand with its 2004 $1.2 million acquisition of Leap Wireless.

Talk, text and data plans start at $40 a month for 2.5 gigabytes of data, but customers can save $5 monthly if they enroll in auto pay.

A 5-gigabyte plan is $45 a month with auto pay.

For $10 more, one can get a 10-gigabyte plan.

Unlimited is $65 per month with the auto pay.

A ribbon cutting is planned for Sept. 2, at 11 a.m.

The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 6 p.m.
