Alabama Road Contracting Services is about 400 feet shy of completing a sidewalk construction project that began on Church Street and extends down Prestwood Bridge Road.
Alan Killen of Civil Southeast Engineering reported to the Andalusia City Council Tuesday that the project was always bigger than engineers expected the state ALDOT grant to cover. To complete the alternative portion of the bid that includes the end of Prestwood Bridge Road to Rosewood Lane (formerly known as Blueberry Hill), the city will have to pick up the additional costs, he said. It is expected to cost $10,000 to complete the last section.
Killen said the portion of the sidewalk that runs beside Andalusia Country Club’s golf course cost more to build than was expected. Because the soil was so sandy, he said, the construction crew had to dig deeper and replace more area with better quality soil, adding to the costs.
The council agreed to finish the project.
