Linda Clifton is a woman on a mission.

She and her husband, James, recently moved their Opp Gun Shop downtown to West Covington Avenue.

“We have some empty buildings here on this street,” she said. “We need to get together as businesses and bring more people here.”

Clifton said the street is affectionately known as Barbershop Alley, but there are other businesses on it as well.

Clifton wants to draw more people to the area.

On Saturday, the first West Covington Shopping Days will be held.

Clifton has been busy sprucing up the local businesses.

“I got permission from a building owner and painted one of them,” she said. “I also decorated some of the empty buildings. I thought if we make a change, we can get more shoppers to come here. We want other small business owners or potential owners to participate. Come down here and see if there is something you would like.”

Clifton said it’s impossible to get new people excited about having a business in Opp, if the current business owners aren’t excited.

Saturday’s event will be a sidewalk yard sale.

“We will be set up and have food ranging from hot dogs to boiled peanuts and desserts,” she said. “We’ll have yard sale items and marked down merchandise.”

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“We are really hoping it inspires some of the empty business owners,” she said.
