The City of Opp on Tuesday accepted a $399,969 low bid for expansion of sidewalks near two schools in the city.

Beasley and Company General Contractors from Castleberry were awarded the bid.

The highest bid in the project came in at $627,000, Alan Killen of Civil Southeast said.

There were five total bids.

The project will start at Opp Middle School on Stewart Street and tie in other streets.

“East Stewart will tie onto the existing to the high school and around to the tennis courts,” he said. “The school board gave us permission to put the sidewalks on their property.”

City Planner Jason Bryan said the project is being paid for through Transportation Alternative Program funds. The city was awarded $400,000 for sidewalks to schools.

Killen said the rainy season will affect the timing where Beasley and Company is working.

He said he expected work on the sidewalks to begin mid-December to the first of the year.
