The playground in Miracle League Park is closed this week after large pieces of glass were found in the sand.

Signs placed near the entrances say the park is closed due to vandalism, but Caitlin Shipman, program director for the Department of Leisure Services, said the problem is not quite as bad as it sounds.

“Someone went in the park and reported big pieces of glass chunked in the sand,” she said, adding that the sand surrounds the swingset area, but kids often play there with buckets and dump trucks.

“A lot of babies play in the sand,” she said. “I could only imagine a barefoot baby playing there. I’m so glad we found it before anybody got hurt.

“We decided the best thing to do was just close the park,” she said. “We are emptying out the sand and cleaning it.”

She is hopeful the park will reopen on Thursday, although rain like that experienced locally Monday afternoon could further delay the project.

Meanwhile, the park will be closed at dusk, just like all other parks in the city system, she said.

“We won’t have the lights on like we do during baseball season,” she said.
