The Covington County Board of Education made three personnel changes and purchased a piece of a equipment during Tuesday night’s board meeting.

They agreed to accept a bid for a walk-in cooler and freezer unit at Straughn Middle School from Mobile Fixture and Equipment Co., Inc., of Mobile, for $44,000.

They OK’d employment for Jackie Lynnette Near as instructional aide at Pleasant Home School, effective immediately.

Allowed Farrye Nickole Crum, who currently teaches special education at Straughn Elementary School, to library media specialist at Red Level High School, effective Jan. 2, 2017.

Superintendent Shannon Driver said that this would allow SES Principal Bettye Anne Older time to find the right person for the special education slot.

“We hope to get some good applicants out of those who graduate,” he said.

They also hired Melissa Anne Jones as elementary intervention teacher at SES, effective immediately.

Driver said this is the third year for the intervention grant.

“It’s a year by year thing,” he said. “Mrs. Older had seven applicants for this job.”

Older said that Jones currently teaches first grade in the Lowndes County Public Schools system and is from Greenville.

Central Elementary Principal Tara Green and Lowndes County Superintendent Dr. Daniel Boyd allowed Jones out of her contract to come teach at Straughn, Older said.
