The Straughn Lady Tigers knocked off Slocomb and Opp Monday night in Straughn to clinch the 2016 Class 3A, Area 3 championship.

Straughn got the area tournament started with a 3-0 victory over Slocomb.

After Slocomb got the first point, Ashley Hughes and Hannah Lawless came up with back-to-back kills to get the Lady Tigers rolling.

Once the Lady Tigers grabbed the lead, they never looked back as they topped Slocomb 25-12.

The Lady Tigers came roaring out of the gate in the second game and hammered Slocomb 25-4.

Straughn picked up a clean sweep as they rolled to a 25-13 victory in the third set.

The 3-0 win over Slocomb placed Straughn in the area championship game against Opp.

The first set in the championship match went back-and-forth, but Straughn came away with a 25-20 victory.

Straughn continued the strong play in the second set and picked up a 25-17 win.

The Opp Lady Bobcats weren’t looking to get swept and came alive and won the third set 25-18.

Opp grabbed the lead off of a point from Millicent Nolin to start the fourth set, but back-to-back points from Lawless and Hughes put Straughn on top 4-1.

Another kill from Lawless then put Straughn up 8-2, and forced the Lady Bobcats to use a time out.

Both teams continued to battle, but the Lady Tigers edged the Lady Bobcats 25-17 to win the championship 3-1.

“That was two great teams out there slugging it out for the championship,” Straughn head volleyball coach Daniel Rodgers said. “To have both of these teams from Covington County going to regionals in Montgomery is really exciting. As for my girls, I couldn’t be more proud of the things that they have accomplished this year. We have accomplished three of the goals that we set out this year, and we still have few that we can still check off.”

Straughn will open up the South Regional in Montgomery on Thursday with a match against Midfield.
