The intersection at Horn Hill Road and U.S. Hwy. 84 in Opp has been the site of several accidents over the last few years.

Most recently, an accident at the intersection claimed the lives of an older Opp couple Friday. 1

Irving Ladon Bullard, 82, and Mary Ellen Bullard, 77, were killed Friday morning when the 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Mr. Irving collided with a 2017 Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

In May 2015, two victims were airlifted from the scene of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection.

In April 2012, two people were injured at the intersection during an accident between a motorcycle and a car. The driver of the motorcycle sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the car sustained non-life threatening injuries.

In February 2011, two people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection.

Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Kevin Chance said Monday that the department recognizes there have been numerous accidents that have occurred at that intersection.

Chance expressed the OPD’s condolences for the Bullards’ deaths.

“We are sorry for the loss of two lives that occurred there this Friday,” Chance said.

He also gave some tips for those traveling in the area of the intersection.

“We encourage and have encouraged in the past for people who approach those intersections to come to a complete stop and look both ways before proceeding to the median, and then look again before crossing the median,” he said. “Also for people to not exceed the speed limit while traveling on the four-lane highway around Opp.”

Chance said the speed limit is 65 mph in that area of the bypass.
