Women interested in learning more about properly firing a gun may sign up for the Opp Police Department’s ladies firearms class.

“This class is offered to female students only and there will be no charge for this class,” Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said. “The class will start Thurs., Dec. 8, at 5:45 p.m., at the City of Opp EOC Center located on Hwy. 52.”

McDonald said that students will be provided instruction on firearms safety, firearms manipulation, reloading, malfunction clearing, natural point of aim and use of force.

“On Saturday, students will conduct live fire familiarization at the OPD range starting at 11 a.m.,” he said.

There are only 20 slots open for the training and they will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

McDonald said that women must bring their own weapon and ammunition.

“You will need 50 rounds of ammunition,” he said.

Hearing and eye protection must be brought as well.

“You must have a valid pistol permit,” he said. “Weapons will not be brought into the classroom until instructed to do so by firearms instructors.”

McDonald said it is required that all students attend the classroom section of the training prior to going to the range.

“All weapons must in a safe, working condition and firearms instructors have the right to remove any weapon they feel is unsafe,” he said. “Firearms instructors have the right to remove any person that is unsafe from the firing range.”

Each student is required to sign a liability waiver form prior to participating in the firearms training.
