Buying a new home can be intimidating, especially if you don’t know what to expect.

The Opp Housing Authority is hoping to help alleviate some of that stress and help prepare locals for the home buying experience.

To do that, the Opp Housing Authority is sponsoring a workshop on purchasing a home Thursday, at 5:30 p.m., at the J.T. Benson Community Room on Barnes Street.

Opp Housing Authority Director Beverly Bell-Barber said that those who attend the workshop will receive information on how they can become eligible to purchase a home.

“A representative from the USDA Rural Development Office will be present to answer and supply information,” she said.

Barber said a lot of people just don’t know anything about buying a home.

“We are just wanting them to be aware of available resources in the community,” she said. “There is nothing to bring with them. They will be provided with helpful information.”

The workshop will include areas of focus such as assessing readiness to buy, budgeting and credit, financing a home, selecting a home and maintaining a home and finances.

Barber said the workshop is free to the public.
