Alleged shoplifter arrested after chase

Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Andalusia Police officers were led on a high-speed pursuit that covered River Falls Street and Church Street. The chase ended when the driver wrecked his vehicle at the intersection of Church Street and the West Bypass. After wrecking, the driver attempted to flee on foot. There were no injuries involved.

The chase was initiated when the driver was observed by Investigator Chris Byrd leaving Goody’s in Westgate Plaza after apparently shoplifting.

The driver was identified as 33-year-old Cedric Dewayne Nearer of Brewton. He is currently charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. More charges are expected. He is being in the Covington County jail under a $19,000 bond.
