Work will begin soon on a new roof at the Opp Public Library.

The council unanimously awarded the low bid to Cornell Malone Corp. for $143,720.

There were four bids submitted.

Wyatt Sasser Construction submitted a $218,600 bid; Amerson Roofing submitted a $147,095 bid; and Johns and Kirksey Inc., submitted a $289,000 bid.

The roof is being paid for by funds from the bond refinance from the Opp Elementary School project.

In September, the former Opp City Council agreed to solicit bids and hired Pensacola-based architectural firm DAG Architects for the project.

At the time, then-Mayor John Bartholomew said there were no local architects available for the project.

DAG architects said the library roof currently has a modified bitumen membrane roof that has been over coated with liquid roof coating to extend the life of the roof.

Roof cores taken showed there is only one roof system on the building.

The library has long suffered from leaks, which has ruined parts of the inside.

Mayor Becky Bracke said she knew that OPL director Courtney Smart would be excited about the project.

“We are excited to do this project,” she said.
