Hammett chosen for local HOF

Seth Hammett will join the distinguished list of members included in Andalusia’s Leadership Hall of Fame when he is inducted at the Chamber of Commerce banquet next week.

The former Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives is the community’s fourth Hall of Fame inductee. He follows John Scherf, Charles Dixon and Solon Dixon.

Andalusia Mayor Earl Johnson will induct Hammett.

“People don’t realize how much he has done for Andalusia,” Johnson said. “I plan to share some of those stories Tuesday night.

SethHammettHammett, who currently works as vice president of business development at PowerSouth, represented Covington County in the state House of Representatives from 1978 until 2010, and served three terms as Speaker.

While Speaker, he served as president of the National Speakers Conference and chaired the 16-state Southern Legislative Conference.

After leaving the legislature, he served as director of the Alabama Development Office (now the Commerce Department), and as chief of staff to Gov. Robert Bentley.

He currently chairs the Energy Institute of Alabama, the Alabama Marketing Allies, and is chairman of the board of Leadership Alabama.

Hammett is president emeritus of LBW Community College and was the founder and first president of First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) of Andalusia.

In 2013, he was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor.

A Covington county native, Hammett holds bachelors and masters degrees in business administration from Auburn University and has Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees from Troy University and the University of West Alabama. He is an Air Force veteran, and a licensed pilot.

He and his wife, Nancy, have two adult children and three grandchildren. He is a member of First United Methodist Church of Andalusia.

The Chamber’s annual banquet is set for Tues., Jan. 31, at the Kiwanis Community Center. The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., and is followed by dinner. Business Council of Alabama executive director Bill Canary will be the guest speaker, and America’s Got Talent finalist and former Cirque du Soleil performer Loop Rawlins will provide entertainment.
