The Straughn High School Quarterback Club held a banquet on Sunday afternoon in the SHS cafeteria to honor the cheerleaders and football players for the 2016 season.

QBC president Mark Glisson opened the even by welcoming everyone that was in attendance.

“It was another good year for Straughn football,” Glisson said. “That wouldn’t have been possible without all of the hard work that the parents and volunteers put in.”

SHS principal Donny Powell also welcome those in attendance and reiterated Glisson’s statements about the parents and volunteers.

“I really want to thank the parents and volunteers that helped out during our football games,” Powell said. “It is truly a blessing to have that kind of support from the parents and the community. It isn’t like this everywhere and we are truly blessed to have it here at Straughn.”

Following a prayer from QBC vice president Clayton Wood, refreshments were served while a video tribute to the senior football and cheerleaders played on the projector.

Cheerleader sponsor Stephanie Bryan introduced her 2016 cheerleaders.

Head football coach Chris Wilson then gave out awards to various players.

Ryan Mitchell, Mitch Schultz and Caleb Evers each received the Academic Achievement Award.

Caleb Thompson won the Kevin Hutton Exrta Effort Award.

Peyton Thomas and Matt Worley were given the Team Captain Award.

Thomas also won the Craig Franklin Leadership Award.

Kenny Shiver and Tony Newton awarded Jacob Hawkins with the Keith Shiver Pound for Pound Award in honor of Kenny’s brother who passed away in 2010 after battling ALS.

“This is special award to me for obvious reasons and we find the person on each time that best represents the way Keith played, which is at 110 percent 100 percent of the time,” Kenny said. “For the second year in a row, that player is Jacob Hawkins.”
