Bartons had many grands

The heritage and history of Joshua and Rebecca I. (Hydrick) Barton ware introduced and outlined in last week’s column. They were natives of South Carolina who migrated to Pike County, Ala. and eventually were residents of Crenshaw County, Ala., after the county was created in 1866. In the earlier column, Joshua’s first four children were listed along with their spouses and children. In today’s story the remaining children and grandchildren will be featured.

The next son, William Morgan Barton, was born in 1851 in Pike County and died in 1928. He was first married in 1871 in Pike County to Sarah “Sallie” Fonia “Fannie” Jeffcoat (1855-1906), daughter of Ruben Jeffcoat and Frances “Fanny” Wyatt. William Morgan and Sallie had the following nine children before her death: James Henry, b. 1872, d. 1919, m. 1893 Martha Rebecca Straughn, daughter of Daniel Isaac Straughn and Georgia Ann Jones; Minnie Emaline, b. 1874, m. 1895 Jimmy Raley; Ellen Lavonia “Vonnie,” m. 1877, d. 1906, m. William Franklin Kilpatrick (1875-1964); Duncan “Dunk” Augusta, b. 1879, d. 1968, m. 1900 Millie Lauretta Paulk (1885-1925), daughter of Elijah “Eli” Nunn Paulk and Louisa Jane Wiggins; Seaborn William, b. 1881, d. 1963, m. Mary Poole (1885-1975); Pearl Eugenia, b. 1883, d. 1955, m. 1900 John Monroe Howard (1879-1935); Reuben Thomas, b. 1887, d. 1940, m. (1) 1906 Callie Donia Paulk (1887-1922) (2) 1922 Jessie Lou Williams, daughter of Jessie Diamond Williams and Evie L. ?; Alice Posey, b. 1889, d. 1973, m. 1908 Marvin Augusta “Gus” Barnett (1886-1954); and Walter Vanday “Vernon,” b. ca 1991, m. (1)1916 in Mississippi Birdie Louise Lee (1893-1978).

After his first wife’s death, William Morgan Barton was married second in 1908 to Frona Elizabeth “Betty” Donaldson. They had the following daughter born to them: Myrtle Lavone, b. 1914, d. 2003, m. (1) 1929 Willie Daniel Ivey (1907-1940) (2) William Bert Glidewell (1919-2010).

The next son, John Calvin Barton, was born in circa 1854 and died in 1925 in Lockhart, Covington County. He was first married circa 1881 to Gatsy Gammage (1865-1907). They had the following seven children before her death: Daisy V., b. 1882, d. 1909, m. 1899 William Alonzo “Lon” Moore (1891-1970); Joseph Lee, b. 1883, d. 1946, m. 1906 Mary Catherine Stokes (1888-1947, daughter of William Sampson Stokes and Nancy Caroline Clary; Susan Carrie, b. 1886, d. 1944, m. John Arnie Taylor (1883-1936); Alton Leamon, b. 1890, d. 1967, m. Leone Gladys Dubose (1897-1974); Lucious Gartrell, b. 1894, d. 1956, m. 1962 Elzie Harrelson (1896-1920); Oliver Lester, b. 1899, d. 1946, m. 1920 Mamie A. Thomasson (1903-1988), daughter of Cornelius Granville Thomasson and Margaret Julia Ann Hassell; and Mertis M., b. 1906, d. 1978, m. 1950 Harvey Ranine Pearman.

John Calvin Barton was married after Gatsy’s death and during 1907 to Lillie Mae Scheffer (1891-1970). They reared his and Gatsy’s children plus the following six of their own: Jesse Calvin, b. 1909, d. 1973, m. 1928 Janie Olivia Talbot (1911-1995); Fred, b. 1910, d. 1964, m. Jessie Mae Moore (1911-1997); Oscar Neal, b. 1911, d. 1995, m. 1934 Marie Majors (1912-2011); Julian Woodrow, b. 1913, d. 1931; Charlie Clyde, b. 1915, d. 200l, m. Mayme Davidson (1912-1997); and Ralph Cecil, b. 1918, d. 1971, m. 1942 Doris Suggs (1925-1987).

No marriage or children have been identified for the daughter, Nancy E. Barton.

Another son, Joseph Frank Barton, was born in 1861 and died in Andalusia in 1931. He was first married in 1887 in Pike County, Ala., to Alabama Virginia McLeod (1868-1919). They had the following seven children: Burie Walter, b. 1887, d. 1949, m. 1916 Rhoda Nancy Crow (1899-1979); Lacey “Lissie,” b. 1890, d. 1964, m. 1910 Martin Beattie Rushton (1885-1945), son of James Nelson Rushton and Alice Ella Jackson; Iduma M., b. 1898, m. Frank L. Weireter; Preston Harvey, b. 1899, d. 1958, m. (1) Lois ? (2) Gladys ?; J. Carroll, b. ca 1900; Curri, b. 1906, m. Earnest L. Birch; and Martin, b. ca 1909.

Joseph Frank Barton was married second in 1924 to Arrie or Arry Pope. They had the following two sons: Robert and Thomas.

Another son, Andrew Jackson Barton, was born in 1864 and died in in the Heath community of Covington County in 1936. He was married to Martha “Mattie” J. Aplin (1866-1938). They reared the following seven children: Lavona, b. 1891, d. 1977, m. 1905 Joseph Allen Tadlock (1874-1953); William M. “Willie,” b. 1893, d. 1937, m. 1911 Minnie Lee Huff (1890-1923), daughter of Jeptha Jefferson P. Huff and Anna Aycock; Turner David, b. 1896, d. 1957, m. Ruth Fletcher (1899-1942); Griffin F., b. 1899, d. 1948, m. Exer B. Bryan (1901-1986); Vela “Beeler” Mae, b. 1901, d. 1996, m. 1925 Millard Brown Fletcher (1901-1972); Kate, b. 1903, d. 1993, m. Alonzo Wilton Elmore (1899-1969); and Luther Clayton “Tommy,” b. 1908, d. 1971, m. Mae Bell ?.

The youngest child and daughter, Sallie Malinda Barton, was born in 1875 in Georgia and died in 1931 in Andalusia, Ala. She was married in 1887 in Crenshaw County, Ala., to John B. Bringhurst. They reared the following nine children: Walter Brantley, b. 1890, d. 1974, m. Ethel Pierce; Nobie, b. ca 1892; Quinelle “Queenie,” b. 1893, d. 1972, m. (1) J.A. Keith (2) James Andrew Hare; John Fletcher, b. 1896, d. 1971, m. (1) 1916 Mollie Barrs (2) Lillian Amelia ?; Fleta R., b. 1896, d. 1969, m. James George Steinbauer (1913-1948); Napoleon, b. 1897, d. 1915, single; Lula, b. 1898, d. 1993, m. John Hugh Johnson (1883-1954); Carrie Elsie, b. 1903, d. 1985, m. 1920 Benjamin Harrison Alderman (1894-1963); and child who died at early age, b. 1904, d. 1910.
