On Sunday, Daron Howard, 46, of Opp, was arrested on 13 counts of negotiating a worthless Instrument.
Howard passed the worthless checks, totaling $1,592, to several merchants across Covington County. The District Attorney’s Worthless Check Unit placed Howard in warrant in December, 2016. Since then, WCU coordinator Jeremie Shaffer and investigator Shawn Bentley have followed leads in their attempts to find and arrest Howard and to make these merchants whole.
District Attorney Walt Merrell stated, “When you’ve written bad checks to the liquor store and to the convenience store and you know your account is overdrawn, then it’s time to stop writing checks. None of these purchases appeared to be out of necessity, and we just can’t tolerate this kind of predatory behavior against our small business owners.”
