Challenger Camp returns in July

Kids from around the county will have a chance to learn from professional soccer coaches when the Challenger Sports soccer camp comes to Andalusia in July.

“We have been doing this camp in Andalusia for the past four or five years,” Challenger Sports Regional Director Ross Lawrence said. “It’s a fun environment for the kids to learn more about the game of soccer from professional coaches.”

In the past, Lawrence said the coaches all came from the UK, but a rise in the camp’s success has lead to opening it up to coaches from all over the world.

“When we started off, it was just a few British coaches that put on camps in Kansas, and it grew from there,” Lawrence said. “Now, we hold camps in every state for more than 120,000 kids. Until this year, the coaches still all came from the UK, but with the growth we’ve experienced we have added coaches from all over the world.”

This year, Lawrence said coaches running the different camps around the United States will be from the UK, Australia, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil and other countries around the world.

“It’s a multicultural group of coaches,” Lawrence said. “They are all professional coaches in their home countries are will be able to help the kids have a better understanding of the game.”

This year’s camp at Andalusia will be similar to past camps, with a few changes.

“We decided this year to change the time of the camp,” Lawrence said. “In the past, the camp has been during the middle of the day, but it just gets way too hot for that. This year, we are going to holding the camps in the evenings and we hope that the weather will be a bit cooler.”

This year’s camp will run July 24-28 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a mini soccer camp from ages 3-5 that last until 7 p.m., each night. The cost of the mini soccer camp is $95.

The half-day camp for ages 6-14 will run until 8:30 p.m., each night.

The cost for the half-day camp will be $125.

Registration for the event can be found online at www.challengersports.com.

Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt and soccer ball.
