Adams, 64, is fighting grade 4 glioblastoma, which are brain tumors that typically are found in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, but can be found anywhere in the brain or spinal cord.

Adams’ daughter, Christy Hawkins, said Friday that they found a spot on her mother’s breast back in August of 2016, and she had surgery to remove the tumor.

“They got all of it,” Hawkins said. “A couple of weeks later, she wasn’t right. She was not able to walk right and I thought she had a stroke, but we found out she had a brain tumor.”

Hawkins said her mom had brain surgery a month after having breast surgery.

“She did radiation and chemo and they sent her to UAB,” Hawkins said. “The last MRI showed that the tumor had grown back. The UAB doctor told us in some cases, it could be the radiation.”

Hawkins said they are continuing with treatment for her mom, and will do another MRI next month.

There are lots of travel expenses for the family because Adams sees Dr. Patel for radiation, Dr. McDaniel for chemo in Montgomery, and goes to the Kirklin Clinic in Birmingham as well.

“We are on the road a lot,” she said. “We have set up donation buckets here at Security Finance and we will be taking up donations today.”

Family and friends sold barbecue plates in advance of today’s benefits, but will have some extras.

The event will be held at Southeast Gas, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

They will have raffle tickets and more as well, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Adams family.

“You always hear of families going through this, but you never know until it yours,” Hawkins said.
