Today is Ash Wednesday the first day of Lent, which is a season of fasting and penance in the Christian calendar. Traditionally, the priest or minister applies ashes to a person’s forehead, and says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

• At St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Holy Eucharist and imposition of ashes will be held at noon and 6 p.m.
• Lenten services at First United Methodist Church in Andalusia, at noon, followed by a $5 lunch. Dr. Darren McClellan is the speaker this week.
