A Covington County grand jury has inducted a 19-year-old in connection with the 2016 death of an Evergreen man in Andalusia.

Devante Burnnette, 19, is charged with murder and is being held on a $5 million bond.

Burnnette is the second teen charged in the February 2016 death of an 81-year-old Evergreen man, Charles Taliaferro, aka “Charlie Boy,” Andalusia Police Chief Paul Hudson said.

Last year, the APD responded to an automobile accident with a possible fatality on Dixon Street on a Saturday afternoon.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the deceased, Taliaferro. Upon further investigation it was determined foul play was involved. After a lengthy search and investigation, a suspect was taken into custody and arrested.

According to Star-News archives, Diamond Dontai Crittenden, then 18, of Andalusia, was charged with murder the day after Taliaferro’s death.

Burnnette was not charged at that time, but recently was indicted by the grand jury.

Taliaferro’s death in 2016 was the first murder in the City of Andalusia since 2001, Hudson said.
