Friends and family are holding a benefit fundraiser for Eloise Scroggins on April 1 at Lindsey Bridge Baptist Church.

There will be a barbecue lunch from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The menu features a barbecue pork plate, baked beans, potato salad, bread and cake.

Dine-in or carry-out available. Plates are $7 each.

There will also be an auction that begins at 4 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Scroggins’ daughter, Jennifer Russ, said described her mom as a very strong woman.

Last year, Scroggins was diagnosed with Stage 4 small cell carcinoma lung cancer.

“She has been determined to beat this thing since day one,” Russ said. “She started her chemo plan on her 53rd birthday. She has made countless trips to Mitchell Center Institute in Mobile for doctor visits, treatments, radiation and scans.”

Russ said that throughout the journey, her mom has never been hopeless.

“She always put it in God’s hand, took it day by day, knowing everything would be OK,” she said. “After five months of chemotherapy, her scans revealed she was cancer-free, no active cells present. She had done it, with God’s hand upon her, beat cancer.”

She was able to return to her life.

Unfortunately, that was short lived, Russ said.

“She returned one month later and a scan showed new spots on her lung and liver,” her daughter said. “The cancer had returned. A bit heartbroken, but still having faith that God would help her through it, she went through several rounds of chemo again and radiation. Sadly, on Fri., March 10, 2017, her doctor released her with hospice care, being that there were no more options for treatment.”

Russ said that her mom has always been willing to help anyone who needed it.

“Our community businesses have been a huge supporter by donating items be auctioned, as well as her friends, family and neighbors. There are several new items up for bid, such as gift certificates to area restaurants and salons, household items, a new BB gun, Echo grass trimmer, saws, door hangars, furniture, plows, toys, yard décor, tables and chairs and much, much more.”
