Covington County Jail officials found more than just scriptures hidden in a Bible delivered to an inmate in the Covington County Jail on Tuesday.
Corrections officer Laura Hudson conducted a thorough search of the Bible and located, hidden within the spine of the book, approximately 4 grams of ice methamphetamine and approximately 2 grams of marijuana.
The 22nd Judicial Drug Task Force positively identified Jarmaine Peoples, 25, from video surveillance and the subsequent investigations by the DTF and U.S. Marshals found Peoples on Jessica Lane in Andalusia.
According to the DTF, Peoples became combative and uncooperative during his arrest.
He was charged with two felonies – distribution of a controlled substance and promoting prison contraband, as well as two misdemeanors – disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was booked into the Covington County Jail on a $126,000 bond.
Jasmine Peoples, 24, sister of Jarmaine, was also arrested for three misdemeanors – disorderly conduct, obstructing government operations and resisting arrest. She was booked into the Covington County Jail on a $9,000 bond.
“Through the diligence and excellent work of corrections officer Laura Hudson, we were able to prevent the infiltration of drugs into the Covington County Jail,” Sheriff Dennis Meeks said.
“We will not tolerate anyone trying to bring drugs into our jail. When they are caught doing so, we will do everything we can to prosecute them to the fullest extent.”
Promoting prison contraband is a class C felony and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance is a class B felony.
A class B felony carries a prison sentence of two to 20 years with fines up to $30,000; a class C felony carries a prison sentence of one year and one day to up to 10 years, and fines up to $15,000.
