Organizers of next week’s golf tournament to benefit the Full Tummy Project of Covington County will register teams through this Thursday, and accept sponsorships through Wednesday.

The tournament is set for Mon., May 15, at the Andalusia Country Club. Lunch will be served at 1, and there will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start in the four-person scramble. Registration is $500 per team.

Organizer Katie King said the tournament is the Full Tummy Project’s major fundraiser.

Full Tummy packs kid-friendly food to be placed each Friday of the school year in the backpacks of children who are at risk for hunger.

“This past school year, we served 250 kids per week in five local schools (Andalusia, Red Level, Opp, Straughn and Pleasant Home),” King said. “We look forward to serving as many or more starting in the fall.”

According to statistics compiled by VOICES for Alabama’s Children, the number of children under 18 with food insecurity is slightly higher in Covington County (28 percent) than other parts of the state (26.4 percent).

Full Tummy spends approximately $32,000 annually packing backpacks.

“This tournament serves as our largest fundraiser, “ King said. “We are a 501(c)3 organization, so all donations, sponsorships and team fees are tax deductible.”

The group also depends upon volunteers to help pack food.

“We’ve had some incredible volunteer groups help us pack this year and we plan to encourage businesses and organizations to contact us to pack,” she said. “It’s a great team-building exercise and is just fun!”
