The Opp Fire Department, Covington County EMA and Opp Street Department spent about an hour and a half Monday morning working to clean up and stop a fuel leak.

Opp Fire Chief Cory Spurlin said his department was dispatched at 6:35 a.m., to the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Highway 134 for a commercial truck with a damaged fuel tank.

“We have a commercial-type box truck carrying some counter tops,” he said. “The driver hit something in the road and it ruptured the fuel tank.”

Spurlin said that firefighters were able to contain the spill and wore the proper PPE to stop the leak underneath the truck.

“Only about 20 gallons leaked out,” he said. “We were able to get it contained before it got into a water source. Then, the street department brought in some sand to help get it up.”

Spurlin said the Opp Police Department helped direct traffic around the spill.
