There were similar themes in the speeches given by the valedictorians and salutatorians in Florala, Opp and Straughn last night as the three high schools held graduation exercises.

In Opp, valedictorian Eli Russell encouraged his classmates to put God first in their lives.

Russell quoted from Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

OHS salutatorian Courtney Osborn thanked parents and faculty for the support provided for the Class of 2017.

In Straughn, valedictorian Ashley Hughes reminisced about the memories she and her classmates made growing up together.

Florala salutatorian Kaylee McDaniel said, “We have had to push through to achieve what God set out for us, and at the end of the day we were always there for each other because we know we were all in this together.”

Valedictorian Hannah White said, “Here we are. This is really happening. And as we sit here at threshold to the rest of our lives, we can’t help but look back.”

White also shared “the immortal words of Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus, ‘Take chances, makes mistakes and get messy.’ ”

The last of the county’s graduations are set tonight. Pleasant Home’s ceremonies will be at 6 p.m., and Red Level’s will be at 7:30 p.m.
