Several players throughout Covington County put up big numbers during the 2017 AHSAA baseball season, but none better the Star-News’ Player of the Year Ethan Wilson.

“That kid deserves every accolade that comes his way,” Andalusia head coach Tyler Dent said. “He is such a hard worker in everything that he does. He is an outstanding two-sport athlete. Whether he is on the mound, at the plate or under center, he always gives it everything he has.”

Wilson, a junior pitcher and centerfield for the Andalusia Bulldogs, hammered opposing pitchers at the plate and carved up opposing hitters on the mound.

During the year, Wilson helped lead the Bulldogs to the area championship with an 8-2 record and a 1.58 ERA. Wilson also struck out 60 batters in in 53 innings pitched.

At the plate, Wilson led the Bulldogs in batting average (.495), home runs (7), RBIs, (35) and triples (4).

Following the conclusion of the season, Wilson has been invited to participate in the 2017 North South Alabama All-Star game in July in Montgomery.

“Ethan is just a joy to coach and be around,” Dent said. “He has a laid back personality and nothing bothers him. That’s the same way that he plays on the field. Whatever he is doing, he has ice in his veins. He is going to be successful in whatever he does and I can’t stress enough how much he deserves every accolade that comes his way.”

As for the coaches, Andalusia head baseball coach Tyler Dent has been named the Star-News’ Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to an area championship.

The Bulldogs played some bigger schools to start the season, but finished with an 18-12 record and a spot in the ASWA’s top 10.

Dent led the Bulldogs to a perfect 6-0 area record on the way to claiming the area title.

However, the Bulldogs ran up against a tough Munford team that eliminated them in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
