BLAZING SADDLES: Locals put up strong marks in day 1 of AJRA finals

Several local kids set solid times in the opening day of the 2017 Alabama Junior Rodeo Association state finals at the Covington Center Arena Thursday morning.
In the girls 6-8 pole bending competition, Brynne Spurlin blistered through the poles and even held up the last pole to keep it from falling as she picked up a time of 21.594.
Spurlin’s time put her in first place at the end of day one.
In the 6-8 girls goat tying, Spurlin’s time of 12.38 put in second place at the end of the first day.
Mary Beth Alexander also put up a time of 23.025 in the girls 6-8 pole bending competition.
Alexander’s time placed her in third place at the end of day one.
In the 6-8 barrel racing event, Alexander led off with a time of 17.285.
Her time held strong, but three girls broke the 16-second mark to knock her out of the top three.
Greycen Worley finished with a time of 24.924 in the 6-8 girls pole bending.
Worley finished with a time of 18.283 in the 6-8 barrel racing event.
In the K-5 pole bending, Laynee Jo Pettis came in strong with a time of 24.837.
Braxton Bozeman finished with a time of 29.392 in the K-5 pole bending event.
In the K-5 barrel racing event, Bozeman put up a time of 22.598.
