A fast food restaurant in Opp was struck by fire Monday morning.

Opp Fire Chief Cory Spurlin said the fire department was dispatched to Church’s Chicken around 5:53 a.m.

“It was electrical,” he said. “It started in the wiring in the walk-in coolers.”

Spurlin said that a motorist noticed the fire in the back of the restaurant and flagged down an Opp Police unit.

“The police officer notified command,” he said.

Spurlin said that the fire had vented itself a little and someone was able to use a garden hose to help get the fire under control before the department got there.

“That made a lot of difference,” he said. “The fire was confined to the overhead area.”

Spurlin said fire fighters had to cut a hole in the roof of the building.

“It was a little bit aggravating to get to,” he said. “There was smoke damage to the rest of the restaurant.”

Spurlin said that the building, located 805 Florala Hwy, wasn’t occupied at the time.

“They don’t serve breakfast at the Opp location,” he said. “So, it was not occupied.”
