Letter: Insinuations about ‘God’s will’ were disturbing

Thank you to Nancy Blackmon for her thoughtful column (June 10, 2017) regarding our current president. She perfectly outlined the shortcomings of his administration and the danger he puts this country under. I agree that his cringe-worthy comments to London’s mayor following a terrorist attack further illustrate his ineptness regarding governing, leadership, and history.

What was disturbing though was the Letter to the Editor regarding Nancy’s column. The writer said it was “God’s will” that Donald Trump be elected president. The same Donald Trump who is a vulgar, narcissistic, pathological liar. An open adulterer who’s been married three times and thinks his wealth makes it OK to sexually assault women. And based on this you think you have the right to judge the sincerity of another person’s faith? I don’t want to live in your theocracy.

Undisputable facts grow every day indicating that Trump, his family, and closest aides have sold out this country to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rather than produce documents related to Russia in response to a subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mike Flynn, retired general, and short-tenured national-security adviser invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This was right after he asked for immunity. Why would he do that?

Trump’s constant demeaning of the press is sending our country down a dangerous path. Conspiracy theories, fake news and “alt” facts are now part of our culture. If 500 so-called “liberal” media outlets around the world independently reached the same conclusion about a story, it doesn’t matter to the Trump faithful, because whatever comes out of his mouth (or Tweets) is gospel. I’m genuinely frightened for journalists. They’ve recently been physically assaulted, threatened, and jailed, just for doing their job. Certain segments of our society cheer this news not recognizing that abject ignorance is one of the first steps of a failing democracy.

The opinion of Democrats by Trump devotees is ridiculous as Trump himself. Democrats stand for a free press, affordable health care for all, a living wage, caring for our sick and disabled, protecting Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, public education, an equitable tax structure not just for the wealthy, infrastructure development, and a clean, healthy environment.

For the past 50+ years, Trump has cheated, threatened, insulted, and lied to thousands of people. So the question remains, can our Democracy survive Donald Trump’s cons and his cabinet of incompetent extremists? God’s will? How about God help us all.
