Too much to drink on the Fourth? AAA offers free tows

Independence Day is one of America’s most iconic and patriotic holidays but unfortunately drunk drivers have also made it one of the deadliest holidays. AAA Alabama is trying to change that.

On the 4th of July AAA Alabama and wrecker services across the state will be offering free tows through the Tow-for-Life Program.

The public service program, in its 31st year of existence, provides free towing services to keep impaired drivers off the road.

“This is a dangerous time of year to be on the roads,” AAA Alabama spokesperson Clay Ingram said. “We want to raise awareness and encourage people to plan ahead when celebrating.”

Drinking and driving can lead to large fines and jail time.

“We’ve all heard that a DUI conviction can cost you financially,” Ingram said. “Legal fees, bail and other related expenses can amount to more than $10,000, but impaired driving can have a cost that impacts more than the wallet. Getting behind the wheel after drinking can lead to life-altering outcomes.”

In 2015, 146 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08 or higher, according to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). According to the U.S. DOT, 92 of those people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver that had a BAC level of .15 or higher, which is almost twice the legal limit.

The Alabama DOT reports that Alabama motorists are seven times more likely to die in a car crash when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

AAA Alabama’s Two-for-Life program begins at 6 p.m. on Tues., July 4 and ends at 6 a.m. on Wed., July 5.

“It is important to make arrangements before you go out. So, that you aren’t making these decisions after you have been drinking,” Ingram said. We want to help keep impaired drivers off the road. So, if you or someone you know has too much to drink on the Fourth of July, just call 1-800-AAA-HELP and we’ll help get you home safely.”

To receive a free towing on July 4 simply call AAA Alabama at 1-800-AAA-HELP and ask for Tow-for-Life. The vehicle must be operable to qualify for a free tow and the operator will ask for the driver’s name, home address, telephone number and exact location of the vehicle and driver. A tow truck will be sent to your location and upon arrival the wrecker driver will ask for identification and the keys to the vehicle. The vehicle will be towed to the home of the driver or owner of the vehicle and the towing is free of charge for up to 10 miles.
