The City of Opp is hosting the Cal Ripken 8U State Tournament this weekend and Opp Mayor Becky Bracke expects a lot of economic impact for the city.

“We calculated there will be around 1,000 people in Opp, Ala., this weekend,” she said.

Bracke said every motel in Opp, Andalusia, Troy and Enterprise is full as a result of the tournament.

“They are shopping in our convenience stores,” she said. “I’ve told the people working the concession stand at the park to make sure they tell them what restaurants are available in Opp.”

Bracke said it’s important for Opp residents to be hospitable toward those attending the tournament.

“We want them to go back and say, ‘Man, that was a great city to have a tournament at,’ ” she said. “Show them a warm welcome.”

The tournament features teams from Flomaton, Daphne, Butler, Childersburg, Brewton, Sumter, Phenix City East, Spanish Fort, Florence, Bay Minette, Westside, Lineville, Athens, Alex City, Citronelle, Roanoke, Grand Bay and Mathews Park.

The winner will move on to the regional July 12 in Spanish Fort.
