The Opp Housing Authority and the House of Ruth have joined forces to promote the resources available to those who are victims of domestic violence.

Beverly Barber, executive director of the Opp Housing Authority, said that an advocate from Dothan’s House of Ruth contacted her to do a series of workshops.

“She wanted the community to be aware of what services are available to victims,” Barber said. “Opp Housing has agreed to allow the workshops to be held at the community center owned by the Housing Authority.”

Barber said there are many victims in the community who are not aware of local services.

“I hope it raises the awareness and the victims will receive the services they are in need of,” she said. “Also, it will help the victims be aware of the warning signs of the different kinds of abuse.”

Barber said organizers are inviting all of Covington County to attend.

Karen Boyd from the House of Ruth will speak.

The House of Ruth is currently the go-to shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Covington County.

The organization serves Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Genevea, Henry, Houston and Pike counties.

The free workshop will be Thursday at 1 p.m.
