Lightning took the life of a Kentucky man camping in Baker, Fla., with his family this week.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department says that the family was camping at the Wilderness Landing Campground off Corduroy Road in Baker.

Jeremy Harper, 35, of Cloverport, Ky., was camping with eight others in his family, including six children ranging in age from 15 months to 13 years old, the sheriff’s department.

Police say that they believe a tree beside Harper was hit by lightning and knocked him to the ground during a thunderstorm around 7:30 p.m.

No one else was injured.

The OCSO wants to express its appreciation to agency Chaplains Larry Carter and Dennis Walker, who rushed to the scene to comfort and help the family after Harper was transported to North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview. Harper passed away around 8:30 Tuesday morning.
