A female inmate serving time in the Covington County Jail was found unresponsive in her cell Thursday evening and was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks confirmed Friday morning that Teria Christine Archie, 36, was found unresponsive in her bed around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Meeks said she was taken to the Andalusia Health emergency room, where she was later pronounced dead.

Meeks said they have sent Archie’s body to the state department of forensic sciences for an autopsy and her death is still under investigation.

However, Meeks said no foul play is suspected, but it is standard protocol to have an autopsy performed when the circumstances are unknown.

Meeks said that Archie had been an inmate in the county jail for a few months.

Star-News archives show, she was arrested on May 19, for failure to pay child support.
