Covington County 8U All-Stars battle through World Series pool play

The Covington County All-Stars fought their hearts out, as they split pool play games on Tuesday at the Babe Ruth 8U World Series in Jensen Beach, Fla.

BLOOMINGDALE 9, COVINGTON 2

The Covington County All-Stars gave it their best effort, but fell 9-2 to the Bloomingdale All-Stars in the second day of pool play at the Babe Ruth 8U World Series.

Bloomingdale got going with a one-out triple from Tori Rudolph and then took then lead on single from Casey Ayres.

The next batter looked like she singled to right field, but Coco Stamps came up firing and got her out at first base.

A strikeout then ended the top half of the inning, but Bloomingdale held a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning with two outs, Allyx Williamson sent a rocket to second base, but the Bloomingdale’s Peytan Benjamin fielded the ball and threw to first for the final out of the inning.

Bloomingdale got a single to open the top of the second inning, but a few pitches into the next batter the runner was called out for leaving first early.

Addyson Byrd picked up a one-out single for the Covington County All-Stars in the bottom of the second inning, but the next two batters grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Bloomingdale All-Stars continued to hit the ball and Ayres put them up 4-0 with a two-run triple.

Ayres then scored on a sacrifice fly to give Bloomingdale a 5-0 lead.

Adelaide Dunn put a good hit on a ball to start the bottom of the third inning, but the Bloomingdale third baseman made the play and threw to first for the out.

In the top of the fourth inning, Bloomingdale’s Diana Anda hit a line drive to second, but Marley Kilcrease slide over and snagged the ball for the first out of the inning.

Bloomingdale then got runners on second and third with one out in the inning.

Trying to push across another run, the next Bloomingdale batter dropped down a bunt, but McKenzie Barrow fielded the ball, looked back the runner at third and fired to first for the second out.

Bloomingdale tried to squeeze in another bunt with the next batter, but Barrow once again pounced on the ball and fired to first for the final out of the frame.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Alex Grimes got things started for the Covington County All-Stars when she ripped a triple to the outfield fence with two outs in the inning.

Williamson followed with a single that scored Grimes from third with ease.

Williamson then moved up to second when Kilcrease dropped down a bunt single, but the Covington County All-Stars weren’t able to bring them around to score.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Bloomingdale All-Stars picked up four more runs to go on top 9-1.

Barrow reached off an error to start the bottom of the fifth inning and then scored on a single from Adelaide Dunn.

The Covington County All-Stars were unable to get another run across.

MAYS LANDING 5

The Covington County All-Stars wrapped up pool play with 6-5 walk-off win over Mays Landing.

In the top of the first inning, Mays Landing used three hits to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Grimes got things going for the Covington County All-Stars when she ripped a one-out single into left field.

Williamson followed with a single that pushed Grimes to third.

A few batters later, Grimes attempted to score on a hit from Byrd, but was then thrown out at the plate for the final out of the opening inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Barrow leadoff the frame with a single and then moved up to second on single from Annlee Wise.

Piper Bulger then reached to load the bases for the Covington County All-Stars.

Brylie Griffen then reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Barrow to score the first run of the game for the Covington County All-Stars.

The Covington County All-Stars kept the Mays Landing All-Stars off the board in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of third inning, Williamson got things going with a one-out double for the Covington County All-Stars.

Byrd then followed with a triple that scored Williamson with ease to make the score 3-2 with two outs in the inning.

The Covington County All-Stars knotted the game up when Barrow drove in Byrd home with a single.

Wise followed with a single that put runners at the corners for the Covington County All-Stars.

The Covington County All-Stars continued the strong inning with a single from Dunn that put them up 4-3.

In the top of the fourth inning, Mays Landing’s leadoff batter reached off an error and then another error allowed her to come around to score the tying run.

The May Landing All-Stars got another run in the inning to take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Covington County All-Stars got a single from Griffen to start the inning and the she advanced to second on fielder’s choice off the bat of Kayden Patterson.

After a couple of plays resulted in outs, Grimes singled to load up the bases for the Covington County All-Stars.

Williamson then tied up the game when she drove in Stamps with single.

The Covington County All-Stars then won in walk-off fashion as Kilcrease roped a pitch into the gap that allowed Grimes to score the winning run.

With the win, the Covington County All-Stars finish pool play with a 2-1 record.
