Opp Police have arrested the victim in last week’s shooting.

OPD Chief Mike McDonald said that they received a call at approximately 9 p.m., on July 23, about shots fired on Hardage Circle.

“The investigation led officers to the Mizell Memorial Hospital Emergency Room where Willie George English, a 39, of Opp was being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest,” McDonald said.

He was flown by air ambulance to an area hospital.

“Evidence showed that English engaged in a shoot-out with another individual on Hardage Circle,” McDonald said. “During this exchange of gun fire, English sustained the gunshot wound.”

McDonald said the investigation determined that Willie George English was a convicted felon and was in possession of a firearm.

“English did with reckless disregard for anyone’s safety, fire the gun that he was in possession of in the direction where other citizens were present, placing them in danger of injury or death,” McDonald said.

He was arrested for reckless endangerment.

“English’s actions were in violation of his conditions regarding his probation in Coffee County,” McDonald said. “English was also placed under arrest for a probation violation and transferred to the Coffee County Jail.”

McDonald said the investigation is ongoing.
