The Florala Wildcats picked up their first win of the season on Friday night as the knocked off Class 1A, Region 2 opponent Red Level 67-28 on Friday night in Red Level.

“This is a huge win for our program,” first-year head coach Scott Mason said. “It’s been awhile since we have had a win around here and it feels really good.”

Mason said his team started a little too hyped up, but quickly settled into a groove.

“We came out a little high,” Mason said. “Once we settled down, things really started to click. We played a lot better tonight than we did last week. The defense played well and the offense just rolled on like it’s going to. We are starting to figure some things out and finding what tools that we have on our team. This is the type of progress that I want to see each week.”

While passing has been strong all season for the Wildcats, Mason said that this week the running game picked up.

“We were more two and three dimensional than we have been the past few weeks,” Mason said. “Leroy Mitchell, Logan West and Tay Collins all had good games running the ball. Quionte’ Cook also had a really good game. Jacob (Hammac) threw two or three touchdown passes, and Anthone Stone had a couple of touchdown catches.”

Mason said that they still have plenty to improve on, but he was pleased with what he saw out of his team on Friday night.

“This was a very good Red Level football team that we played against,” Mason said. “They play hard and they are very well coached. We still have some things that we have to work on, but overall, I was very pleased with the way we played tonight.”

Mason said that he would like to see the win carry momentum over into next week.

“We’ve got another tough match up next week,” Mason said. “McKenzie will be coming here, and you know that McKenzie always has a talented team.

With the win, Florala improves to 1-2 and Red Level falls to 0-3.
