Officers found the suspect in an Opp stabbing hiding in a culvert under Lillie Street Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to reports that a man had been stabbed in the 300 block of Pierce Street shortly after noon. When they arrived, they learned the victim had been transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

Investigators determined that Mathew Levi Taylor, 28, of Opp, had confronted a female who was sitting in a vehicle. The woman told police the suspect attacked her by grabbing her throat and attempting to strangle her. The female victim and Taylor had been involved in the past.

When the woman began to call for help, a second man exited the residence and attempted to intervene. According to the male subject, Taylor then cut his warm with a knife before fleeing on foot.

OPD officers, 22nd Judicial Drug Task Force agents, a Covington County District Attorney’s Office Investigator, and a State Bureau of Investigations agent established a perimeter around this area and at 1:30 p.m., located Taylor hiding in a culvert under Lillie Street. He was taken into custody without incident.

The stabbing victim was transferred to a Dothan medical facility due to the seriousness of his wound.

The OPD said charges are currently pending against Taylor for assault second degree, unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle, domestic violence by strangulation, criminal mischief, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
