German artist returning to city

Guido Frick will return to Andalusia in November for a three-day plein air painting class.

Plein air painting, is a phrase borrowed from the French equivalent meaning “open (in full) air.” As in the past, Frick’s students will paint an outdoor scene each day.

Last October, for instance, his students painted a still life on the first day; the second, they painted in a hay field; and the third day, they went to Lake Frank Jackson.

The German-born artist said he treasures his time in the United States, and particularly enjoys painting the colors of fall.

He spends six months each year in the United States, and will travel throughout the country, producing workshops from California to Florida.

For most of his students, painting outdoors is a new experience, he said. It’s the artist’s interpretation of what he or she sees in nature that makes it art, he said.

The class, coordinated by the LAAC, is set for Wed. through Fri., Nov. 3.

The LAAC also will host a reception featuring his work at The Gallery on Thurs., Nov. 2, from 5:30 until 7.
